AaSABBIC Mission:
|
The basic mission of Sustainable Agriculturally-Based Bioindustries Cluster (SABBIC) is to exploit the breakthroughs of molecular biology, genetics, and advanced engineering research to increase the percentage of specialty chemicals, intermediate chemicals, and energy obtained from agriculturally-based resources. Creating economic development opportunities through science and technology is an important part of the mission of SABBIC. Cornell, as the land-grant institution for New York, has a tradition of providing scientific and technical contributions to the economic development of rural communities. SABBIC is an attempt to continue this tradition by doing what Liberty Hyde Bailey and other Cornell faculty did over a century ago - bring the scientific and technological revolution to rural communities. A strong bio-industry sector in New York State would allow rural communities to become more economically diverse and profitable, add value to products, and may help the return of abandoned farmland to commercial use again. It is expected that bioindustries will generate one job for every $250,000 in annual sales. |
